A beach town built for the space program, then filled in
Satellite Beach did not grow up slowly. In 1956 the Hedgecock brothers and a cousin bought a 130-acre palmetto tract on the barrier island, A1A still a narrow gravel road, and started putting houses on it. Residents voted the town in on August 3, 1957 — 56 of 57 eligible voters — after a plan for a large trailer park off A1A and Park Avenue pushed the question. Evelyn Price won a $25 contest to name it. Percy Hedgecock was the first mayor.
The census is the rest of the story. 825 people in 1960. 6,558 in 1970. That is nearly eight times over in a single decade, then 9,163 by 1980, and the count has barely moved since: 11,226 in 2020 on 2.9 square miles of land. Patrick Space Force Base sits on the north line. The Atlantic is the east edge, the Banana River the west, and 3.6 miles of navigable canals — the Grand Canal among them, dredged in the mid-1950s to fill a mangrove swamp — cut through the middle. Satellite Beach has no inland half. A wall here is close to salt water whichever way it faces, and most of those walls went up in that one short window and have been painted over ever since.
What a barrier-island wall gives up first here
- Horizontal cracking under window sills on the original 1960s block, where the coat was thin to begin with
- Rust staining on a pool-equipment wall or a lintel, worst on the elevation that takes the ocean wind
- Hollow, drummy panels on a canal lot where splash and irrigation keep the base wet
- Paint lifting in sheets after decades of coats sealed over a wall that never dried out

Sound the wall before anyone cuts it
On a Satellite Beach house the first pass is a knuckle and a hammer handle, elevation by elevation, because a canal lot and an ocean lot on the same street fail in different places. We listen for stucco still gripping block versus stucco riding on old paint. The second one takes any patch you put over it down inside a year. Where the sound goes hollow we cut back to something solid, treat rusted steel instead of burying it, and rebuild in coats so the new work bonds. Texture gets worked out by hand against your wall, in your light, before anything is committed — on a street of near-identical ranches a mismatched patch is the only thing a neighbor sees.

- The water bill. 32937 is shared, and the post office has used Satellite Beach as the name on that ZIP for decades. Indian Harbour Beach is its own city, with its own page here. Tell us the city on the utility bill and the street, and we will put the visit in the right town.
- We back onto a canal, not the ocean. Does that still chew up stucco?
- Yes, just differently. Canal lots stay wetter at the base — splash, irrigation, and a wall that never really dries — so the coat lets go low. Ocean lots take salt on the steel first, which shows up as rust at a window head. We sound both faces. A Satellite Beach house can have one of each on the same floor plan.
- Most of the street went up in the sixties. Do we have to redo the whole house?
- Usually not. We tap every elevation and find out how much is still bonded. If one face has let go and the others are sound, we rebuild that face and match it in. A whole-house re-stucco only makes sense when the failure is everywhere, not because the neighbors' houses are the same age.
