An island between two rivers, built fast
Merritt Island was never its own incorporated city. It's unincorporated Brevard County — a Census-designated place run by the county, not a town with its own city hall — sitting on a strip of land with the Indian River on one side and the Banana River, split further by Sykes Creek and Newfound Harbor, on the other. That geography changes what a stucco wall is up against here. A house eight miles inland deals with salt carried on the wind from one direction. A house on Merritt Island sits between two bodies of brackish water and takes it from both sides at once, so lintels and stucco stops corrode on more than one elevation instead of just the one facing the coast.
The other half of the story is timing. Merritt Island's population grew fast through the 1950s and 1960s as the Space Race took off and Kennedy Space Center rose on the island's north end. - Does having water on both sides of the island change how you repair a wall?
- It changes what we check first. A wall facing the Indian River corrodes from the west, and a wall facing the Banana River or Sykes Creek corrodes from the east, so a Merritt Island house can end up with rust damage on more than one elevation instead of only the side that faces the coast. We look at every face of the wall, not just the one that looks worst from the driveway.
